Write like Hemingway with Hemingway Editor

Recently, I felt a sudden urge to read Hemingway. I thought the hard-boiled style of the master would wake me up from my lethargic routines and invigorate my senses.

A coincidence led me to a review by Justine Cone about a new writing software called Hemingway Editor.

Justine writes about the relevance of Hemingway’s simple style in the age of online writing.  He presents Hemingway Editor as a tool that can help writers to improve their writing based on the model of Hemingway.

Just like Justine did in his review, I typed this post on the free online version of Hemingway Editor to check how it works.

Hemingway Editor is not a checker for spelling and grammatical errors. It shows if any sentence is hard to read, if words or phrases can be simpler, and if you are using unnecessary adverbs or passive tense.  Keeping your grade shown in the upper right column under 10 means you are getting close to the bold and clear style of Hemingway.

I felt that Hemingway Editor forces me to write shorter and simpler sentences. Although I am not sure if it makes my writing better, I am sure of one thing. It prevents me from writing loose sentences, which definitely makes it easier to read my post.

Hemingway Editor is a new type of editor that is easy to use and improves final drafts.  You can try the free version here. Desktop version for Windows and Mac is available at the price of $6.99. Give it a try if you are looking for an alternative to boring grammar checkers.

One reminder. Hemingway Editor does not check grammar such as third person singular verbs. If you want an editing software with extensive spell and grammar check, read this post.
