I guess you already know what storyboard is, given that you found and are reading this post. But if you feel like academic, check Wikipedia for the definition of storyboard.
Google “storyboard software.” You will find the search results amount to more than 36 Million.
You can read top websites on the first page, if you like. But if you want to skip that boring part, I can recommend the most popular storyboard software that I found using my method.
Using this method, you don’t have to read all reviews but still can find out which software is the most popular through quantitative analysis of the product websites.
By the way, I think you can apply this method to selection of any software that has too many alternatives.
Here is how I did it.
First, I had to make a list of promising storyboard software. I googled “storyboard software” and browse a few good articles on the first page.
For example, these two articles provide detailed reviews on storyboard software.
https://www.studiobinder.com/blog/best-storyboard-software-free-storyboard-templates/
https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/storyboard-software
After skimming the two articles and other websites on the first page, I made a tentative list of websites for storyboard software that looked promising.
Here they are.
- https://boords.com/blog
- https://www.canva.com/create/storyboards/
- https://www.vyond.com/resources/how-to-storyboard-your-next-video/

Second, I ran all the websites on the similarweb, the great traffic analyzer.
If a website does not have decent traffic, the similarweb shows no data with error message “not sufficient traffic.” I can pass them and focus on websites with large traffic. Through this step, I got three software with the highest traffic. This is based on a simple reasoning, “the more traffic, the more users.”
The three popular storyboard software are
1. Studiobinder
2. Boords
3. Storyboarder
* There was one software with the highest traffic that I excluded from the final list. The software was not storyboard per sei. It was a presentation software that can also be used for storyboard, meaning the high traffic was not directly related to storyboard software.
Third, I google each software in combination with word “storyboard.”
You can just skip this step but I did it to make sure. Anyway, here is the result of each software. The large number of search results confirms that these are really popular storyboard software mentioned by many websites.
1. Studiobinder – 40K (search results)
2. Boords – 10M
3. Storyboarder – 13M
Why did the Studiobinder get so little number? I think it is related to the nature of the software. Studiobinder is not just for storyboard. It calls itself production management software.
In contrast, Boords website calls the software “complete storyboarding toolbox” and Storyboarder, well, you can just tell by looking at its name 🙂
So, even without having to read tons of reviews, I came to a conclusion that Studiobinder, Boords, and Storyboarder are the most popular storyboard software.
